Landscaping changes over time. Trees get taller, shrubs fill out, and areas that were once open can become completely different after several growing seasons. While that growth can make a property look more established and beautiful during the day, it can also change how an older outdoor landscape lighting system performs at night.
That was the situation with one of our recent LED landscape lighting upgrades in Michigan. The property already had an outdoor lighting system, but over time, new growth throughout the yard began blocking and overpowering the original lighting layout.
Instead of simply replacing the existing fixtures in the same locations, the system needed to be updated to work with the landscape as it looks today.
Updating an Older Landscape Lighting System
For this project, the existing outdoor lighting was upgraded with new LED fixtures, and the layout was redesigned around the property’s current landscaping.
This was important because outdoor lighting isn’t only about installing brighter fixtures. Placement plays a major role in how a home and landscape look after dark.
As trees and plants mature, fixtures that once highlighted certain features may become hidden behind branches or vegetation. Light can also be blocked or directed toward areas that are no longer the main focal points of the yard.
By redesigning the layout, the new system could better complement the mature landscaping rather than competing with it.
Giving Mature Trees and Landscaping New Life at Night
The finished lighting design brings attention back to the features that make this property stand out.

As shown in the completed project, the new lighting highlights the large trees and surrounding landscaping while also drawing attention to the home. Instead of portions of the property disappearing into darkness, strategically placed lighting creates depth and allows different landscape features to remain visible after sunset.
An updated landscape lighting system can provide several benefits:
- Better visibility around the property after dark
- Improved highlighting of trees and architectural features
- A refreshed look without redesigning the landscaping itself
- More effective fixture placement around mature plant growth
- Energy-efficient illumination with modern LED fixtures
The goal isn’t necessarily to light every part of the yard. A thoughtful design uses light strategically to highlight key areas while maintaining the natural nighttime atmosphere of the property.
Has Your Yard Outgrown Its Outdoor Lighting?
If your landscape lighting system was installed years ago, the landscaping surrounding it probably doesn’t look exactly the same today.
Trees may now be much larger. Shrubs may be covering fixtures. New planting beds or other landscape improvements may have changed which areas should be highlighted.
That doesn’t always mean you need an entirely new landscape. Sometimes, updating the LED fixtures and redesigning the lighting layout can make a dramatic difference in how the existing property looks at night.
American Lawn Sprinkler can evaluate an older outdoor lighting system and determine how the layout can be updated to better complement the landscaping you have today.
