There’s something about classic red-and-white Christmas lights that instantly makes a home feel ready for the holidays. For this project in Attica, MI, the goal was to create a festive candy cane-inspired display that complemented the home while making the entire property stand out after dark.
The finished design combines clean roofline lighting, wrapped porch posts, illuminated garage doors, a large wreath, and even lighting on the old barn in the background. Together, these details create a coordinated Christmas display that looks great from the house all the way down the driveway.

Creating the Candy Cane Christmas Lights
For this Christmas light installation in Attica, MI, we used alternating red-and-white lights to create the classic candy cane look.
The lighting was installed along the front and right side of the house, helping define the shape of the home and making the roofline visible at night. The porch posts were also wrapped in red and white, carrying the same theme from the roofline down to the entrance.
Instead of stopping at the main house, we continued the design around the garage doors. This helps give the entire front of the property a more complete and intentional appearance rather than having lights concentrated in just one area.
A Wreath That Creates a Holiday Focal Point
One of the standout features of this installation is the large illuminated wreath on the front peak of the home.
Adding a focal point like a wreath can help break up long stretches of roofline lighting and draw attention toward the architecture of the house. Paired with the red-and-white lights, it adds another layer to the display without making the overall design feel overcrowded.
And there’s another detail that makes this property special—the old barn in the background was decorated with Christmas lights too.
Lighting both the house and barn creates a much bigger visual impact when approaching the property. From the driveway, the different illuminated structures work together to make the entire property feel festive.
Why a Coordinated Christmas Lighting Design Matters
Great Christmas lighting isn’t necessarily about putting lights everywhere. A well-planned design considers the home’s architecture, landscaping, driveway, and other structures on the property.
Professional Christmas lighting can help create:
- A consistent holiday theme throughout the property
- Clean, defined rooflines and architectural features
- Eye-catching focal points such as wreaths and entrances
- A welcoming view from the street or driveway
- A polished display without homeowners handling the installation themselves
For this Attica property, the candy cane theme gave us a simple direction that could be carried across multiple areas while still allowing the individual features of the home to stand out.
Bring Your Own Christmas Lights Idea to Life
Every home is different, which means holiday lighting doesn’t have to follow the same design from one property to another. Some homeowners prefer classic white lights, while others want traditional Christmas colors or something playful like this red-and-white candy cane theme.
The design can be adapted around the architecture and features that make each property unique.

This project was completed at a residential property in Attica, MI, and we loved seeing how the house, garage, porch, wreath, and barn came together once everything was illuminated.
